Going on holiday?
Don't know what to do with your dog?
Don't like the idea of leaving your faithful friend in kennels?
Then maybe I can help. I take dogs in at my finca in Riogordo where they live as family and are as spoilt as if they were my own. Dogs have a large fenced 800 m2 garden to roam in during the day and sleep in the house at night. Each dog is made to feel loved with plenty of attention and cuddles. They are exercised three times a day, using a mixture of letting them run free in my horses one acre field and taking them for walks on the lead twice a day.
Your dog will be kept with my 8 year old castrated male husky and my five year old female and any other dogs that are staying up to a maximum of six visitors. I can't take in dogs that are vicious to either humans or other dogs. I will take in dogs that are elderly or nervous or that need that extra bit of TLC. I also don't have a problem dealing with dogs that are incontinent or that need a bit of help with house training. If your dog chews, please warn me in advance so I don't leave him unattended with my best furniture!
The key to keeping a large group of dogs together without problems is for them to receive plenty of exercise. Tired dogs are happy dogs. Where ever possible I walk the dogs together on their leads to encourage pack bonding and to emphasise my position as pack leader as I control both direction and speed. Going outside the gate and exploring the outside world in a controlled way is an important part of a dogs day. Imagine if you never left your back yard how bored you would get! Dogs are automatically taught not to pull as part of this process. If your dog has a problem with walking on the lead or any other behaviour problems, I would be happy to work with him and see if I can resolve it. After the walk on the lead dogs are then let loose in the field so they can run, play and just be dogs. When I leave the property dogs are left in the house to ensure they do not stray. They are left in separate rooms with a dog gate across so they can see the other dogs but not get to them.
When a dog first arrives he will be introduced to my dogs and any others that are staying while you are still there. After you leave I take him into the house for half an hour or so to allow him to adjust to your departure and prevent him from following your car. This is also time for him to get to know me better and learn when I have coffee it comes with biscuits! Most small dogs tend to acquaint themselves with my sofa at this point. I think being higher gives them more confidence around my dog! After I take them all out for a long walk on the lead. This is a 'magic' way of introducing calm and pack bonding. Dogs in the wild normally migrate by walking from one place to another another following the pack leader. This migration instinct is still very intact in the domesticated dog. Once we arrive home the dogs are all tired and happily go off to sleep until their next walk or the sound of me putting the kettle on!!
This is my fifth year of doing doggy holidays. Both of my dogs are used to sharing me and their home and are very well socialised. I take them to agility and obedience classes each week (when its not too hot) and do a lot of trick training with them. Most regular canine visitors to my house can at least give paw having learnt from my dogs that its the quickest way to part me from my pocket full of treats! I also give trick training displays at local events with my huskies and attend the dog shows that are run by charities such as CAS, PAD, Adana and Arch and Chain. I have a youtube chanel where you can see some of the things I get up to with my dogs at http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCsn09fOQTKHCrLASdJSF9Q/videos
In order for the dogs to feel at home please bring their bed with them. You will also need to provide food for your dog as I believe it is important they stay on the same diet. If your dog refuses to eat during their stay I will do my best to get them to eat with chicken or gravy. Please tell me if they have any special dietary needs or food allergies. My own dogs live on a raw meat and bones diet, and I also cook occasionally for them. I have no problems feeding your dog on a raw or home cooked diet if that is what they are used to, as long as you provide the ingredients. Dogs will need to be up to date on their vaccinations, worming and have a flea, tick and mosquito treatment. Dogs should also wear a collar.
